Event Description:

An exhibit of black and white photographs entitled “Home & Family” will be on display at the Slocumb Galleries, located in the Department of Art & Design at East Tennessee State University from Monday, July 24 through Friday, August 25, 2017. Artful Aging workshop participants created these original black and white photographs in 8 weeks of study with Katie Sheffield, ETSU Visual Resources Curator, using film-based darkroom developing and printing techniques.

A reception with refreshments will be held on Thursday, August 17th, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm and is open to the public free of charge. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the photographers and learn more about their experiences in this unique arts education opportunity, which brings adults 55 and up together with professional teaching artists.

Johnson City Public Library was selected as one of only 15 nonprofit organizations throughout the U.S. to receive a “Seeding Artful Aging” grant from Aroha Philanthropies. Throughout 2017, Johnson City Public Library will be offering intensive 8 week long creative arts workshops as part of this grant initiative.

Artful Aging programs inspire and enable older adults to learn, make and share the arts in ways that are novel, complex, and socially engaging. Their work is driven by "teaching artists whose creative process and understanding of older adults bring joy, connection, improved health, and well-being, and a renewed sense of purpose to older adults in community and residential settings."

The Slocumb Galleries are located at 232 Sherrod Drive, on the ETSU campus. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with extended hours on receptions and Thursdays until 6 p.m. For more information, contact Slocumb Galleries’ Director Karlota Contreras-Koterbay via email contrera@etsu.edu or call/text 423.483.3179. Parking and handicapped access are available.
