Event Description:
Presented by the Johnson City Public Library and AROHA Philanthrophies in partnership with ETSU Department of Art & Design
Artful Aging: Photography Exhibition
Mentored and Curated by Katie Sheffield
July 2 to 18, 2018 at the Slocumb Galleries
Reception: July 2, Monday, 5 to 7 p.m.

Each Artful Aging Photography classes focus on a different printing method: Photo 1 focuses on printing in the darkroom, while Photo 2 uses digital printers. These are free ten week long workshops in photography, taught by Katie Sheffield, the Department of Art & Design Visual Resources Curator at ETSU. All supplies are provided by the library. Participants must be 55 years of age or older. There will be a culminating exhibit and reception at ETSU’s Slocumb Galleries. Lisa Williams, Adult Services Librarian at JCPL, says “we had a big list of people who asked us to have a photography class again!” To register for these or any of our other Artful Aging Classes, call us at 423-434-4454.

Classes are held at ETSU’s photo darkroom and classrooms and meet twice weekly for two hours. Photo 1 meets Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m., May 7 – June 27, 2018.  Photo 2  meet s on Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m., May 8 – June 28, 2018. These classes are ideal for adults with little to no experience in photography. A strong commitment to attend each session is required. Lisa Williams adds “I think these classes could be good for people who already have a little more experience with photography as well. For someone who already has a darkroom background, they could learn some new tools, techniques, or even terminology to improve their printing. It could also give people who have digital photography skills aready some of those same tools and techniques they may not be familiar with.”

Johnson City Public Library was selected again in 2018 to receive a “Seeding Artful Aging” grant from Aroha Philanthropies. Artful Aging programs inspire and enable older adults to learn, make, and share the arts in ways that are novel, complex, and socially engaging. Their work is driven by “teaching artists whose creative process and understanding of older adults bring joy, connection, improved health and well-being, and a renewed sense of purpose to older adults in community and residential settings.”
