Grow Appalachia: Food Security in Central Appalachia One Family at a Time - A talk by David Cooke
Start Date: 4/10/2014Start Time: 7:00 PM
End Date: 4/10/2014End Time: 8:00 PM

Event Description:

Grow Appalachia assists families in counties within Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, and Tennessee with growing as much of their own food as possible. This project aims to address food insecurity in our region and partners with communities to provide people with the skills and resources to access healthy, fresh, no- or low-cost food. To accomplish their goals, Grow Appalachia coordinators make gardening grants available to communities and provide educational opportunities in the areas of garden planning, planting and maintenance, heart-healthy cooking and up-to-date food processing and preservation techniques. They also donate a portion of the harvest at each partner site to a local food bank or others who cannot garden for themselves.

David Cooke, Director of the Grow Appalachia project, is a West Virginia native, a lifelong gardener, and formerly the program coordinator of the Entrepreneurship for the Public Good Program at Berea College. He will speak on the efforts of Grow Appalachia and provide insight into the success of the project.
