Event Description:
"The Old Maid and the Thief and Riders to the Sea"
Two one-act operas

Karen Smith, director
ETSU Opera Workshop

The ETSU Opera Workshop, under the direction of Karen Smith, offers two operas in one night. Gain Carlo Menotti’s one act opera, The Old Maid and the Thief, was one of the earliest operas commissioned for radio performance. Menotti said of this story about a spinster, her desperate house-keeper and their wandering house-guest, "The devil couldn't do what a woman can- Make a thief out of an honest man." Following this comic opera comes the tragic tale of a woman who is destined to suffer great loss. Riders to the Sea, a one-act opera by Ralph Vaughan Williams, is set on the Aran Islands and tells the story of one family and their volatile relationship with the sea. The haunting melodies and moving drama paint an unforgettable picture of the struggle of the Irish people.
