Event Description: Modern Master: The Music of Ola Gjeilo
The ETSU Chorale is honored to host composer/pianist Ola Gjeilo for a concert featuring his compositions for choir, string quartet, and piano. Ola’s concert works are performed all over the world, and he is quickly becoming recognized as one of the great living composers of choral music. He has been commissioned by Barbara Bonney, Solveig Kringelborn, Atle Sponberg, Philip Brunelle, the Edvard Grieg Society, St. Olaf College, Luther College, Ensemble Mendelssohn, and Choral Arts Ensemble. His choral music has also been performed by elite choirs including the Kansas City Chorale, Conspirare, World Youth Choir, VocalEssence, Mogens Dahl Chamber Choir, BYU Singers, Norwegian Soloists’ Choir, and the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation’s Radiokoren. Ola was the composer in residence for the Grammy-winning Phoenix Chorale during the 2009-2010 season. In 2012 the Phoenix Chorale released the album Northern Lights on the Chandos label, which is devoted entirely to Ola’s music for choir. For this special concert, Ola will be joining the ETSU Chorale at the keyboard for his compositions with piano. The Chorale will also be joined by a guest string quartet and Ted Belledin on saxophone. |
