PROCESS AS PRACTICE: Basler Chair Lecture with Mary Jane Jacob
Start Date: 2/5/2014Start Time: 7:00 PM
End Date: 2/5/2014End Time: 9:30 PM

Event Description:

“The process is art and its product, no matter at what stage it be taken, is a work of art,” said American philosopher John Dewey. More than 50 years later art critics are still debate how social practice can be art when often times there are no permanent art objects and, in their terms, all you have is a shared community process. This lecture will look at process as an art practice and the concepts behind it. It will consider the continuous nature of process in social art making, the richness of collective exchange, and the potential of such processes in the hands of artists seeking to make real and, yes, lasting social change.

Mary Jane Jacob is the 2013-14 Basler Chair of Excellence for the Integration of the Arts, Rhetoric and Science. She is a curator who, through hundreds of exhibitions, site-specific and community-based projects, and public programs, has actively worked with artists to expand the practice and public discourse of art as a shared process. Study into the nature of the art experience has led to anthologies Buddha Mind in Contemporary Art, Learning Mind: Experience into Art, and Chicago Makes Modern: How Creative Minds Changed Society. As Professor and Executive Director of Exhibitions and Exhibition Studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she is currently spearheading a major research project on Chicago social practice.
