WHAT'S ART GOOD FOR?--Basler Chair Lecture with Mary Jane Jacob
Start Date: 12/4/2013Start Time: 7:00 PM
End Date: 12/4/2013End Time: 9:00 PM

Event Description:

In this second lecture, this year’s Basler Chair, Mary Jane Jacob will confront the age-old question of why is art useful to learn, or see or hear or experience, to support our institutions and public life. It will draw upon the 20th-century philosophy of John Dewey, who sought to make the case for art and bring it into our national, civic identity. Where are we today on that subject and what can we learn from Dewey?

Mary Jane Jacob is a curator who, through hundreds of exhibitions, site-specific and community-based projects, and public programs, has actively worked with artists to expand the practice and public discourse of art as a shared process. Study into the nature of the art experience has led to anthologies Buddha Mind in Contemporary Art, Learning Mind: Experience into Art, and Chicago Makes Modern: How Creative Minds Changed Society. As Professor and Executive Director of Exhibitions and Exhibition Studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she is currently spearheading a major research project on Chicago social practice.
