Event Description:

The ETSU Department of Art & Design and the Slocumb Galleries in partnership with the Urban Redevelopment Alliance (URA) present “Memory & Secrets by Vanessa Mayoraz from September6 to 27, 2013, at the Tipton Gallery with artist’s talk and reception on September 6, First Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The exhibition “Memory & Secrets” features Mayoraz new series of drawings based on secrets entitled “Rendering Anonymous” and some of her earlier works on lightboxes called “Botanica Memorabilis” and miniature drawings on capsules “Ouragans Intimes.”

Mayoraz’ work often take the form of installations and participatory projects, favoring its relationship to places and people. Her strong attention to insert the works into their context – quite often outside institutions dedicated to art – and to their reception represents an important aspect of her practice as well as a haunting interest for memory and its maintenance. Her practice is mostly divided in two bodies of work installations and interventions and greatly varies in their choice of medium. Depending on the conceptual need of the different projects, she uses sculpture, drawing, sound or video.

The artist describes the seriesRendering Anonymous” as about secrets and how we are all keeping some. Mayoraz considers secrets as “sometime as a burden and sometime it is just what make us complete.” Inspired by the “rumors and glitches of stories” that she is given privilege to share, Mayoraz set up a website that people can submit their secrets anonymously; some of these secrets are visualized into works included in the exhibition. She added, “secrets are shared depending on situations, connections and specific rules that belong the owners themselves.” The JC Secrets project provide avenue to private memories that people hold dear as Mayoraz stated, “Johnson city itself has a hidden history that we might or might not see appear through this collecting process.”

Vanessa Mayoraz received a BFA from the Geneva University of Art and Design in Switzerland and an MFA in Art and Public Spaces and New Artistic Strategies at the Bauhaus University Weimar in Germany. She has been performing various workshops and lectures on subject such as ‘Artist as Archivist’ and ‘Contemporary Art Practices’. Her work has been exhibited internationally including the Museum of Contemporary Art of Belgrade, Villa Bernasconi in Geneva and Young Artist Biennale in Moscow. She is currently a c=visiting faculty at East Tennessee State University.

The Tipton Gallery is located at 126 Spring St. in downtown Johnson City. The gallery is open during First Fridays, receptions, Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. and by appointment.
